Camera Design for Scotty.ai

Scotty Labs started at SRI (Stanford Research Institute) and in a short time grew into an autonomous vehicle company. I was part of the core team initially hired at the startup and was with the company until it was acquired by DoorDash, in August of 2019.

I worked mainly as a mechatronics engineer, splitting my time between electrical and mechanical systems on the project.  This included everything from debugging CAN buses and power distribution, to designing custom waterproof enclosures for delicate cameras.

Our system utilized a collection of special machine vision cameras, each requiring adjustability as well as resistance to the elements. I designed a set of modular enclosures with CNC machined aluminum and 3D printed plastic components.

The design successfully survived several several rain storms on a large semi truck and one collision with a swarm of bees on I-5. The design was made in Solidworks. The parts were manufactured using 3D Hubs (machined aluminum) and Sculpteo (3D printing).
